Brief Bio

Lauren Puryear, Associate Executive Director, CHGW

My passion for the field of human services began at a young age. I grew up in a small town called Paterson, NJ where I witnessed poverty, hunger, gang violence and all types of social injustices on a daily basis. My environment caused me to be puzzled, frustrated and curious, most importantly, my environment sparked a desire to make a change. I attended an all-girl Catholic High School where I studied and participated in a variety of community service projects. Graduating as an honor roll student leader catapulted me into a Bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies and Philosophy from Virginia Union University and I later obtained my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Walden University. At the start of my career, I worked with the at-risk youth population, children and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities and later found my purpose in the arena of ending homelessness. Outside of work, I enjoying spending time with my son and family, extreme couponing and feeding the hungry across the world. I recently completed my PhD in Clinical Psychology. I am excited to join the Covenant House family! I am looking forward to impacting the lives of the youth in the Greater Washington DC area and working together to end homelessness and provide the necessary tools for survival to those in need.
